The State of Facilities in Independent Schools – The Context, the Reality, the Future
By any measure, the COVID-19 pandemic has had an extraordinary impact on the delivery and viability of independent school education. While it undeniably intensified long-standing business challenges, it also generated new opportunities to reimagine what facilities should look like moving forward. This session examines the current and future implications for the school built environment, as institutions continue to confront a destabilized education marketplace, and opportunities to thrive as schools adapt to new priorities and expectations.
Addressing CMMS Needs for Independent Schools
This session will present the newest arrival on the school facilities CMMS scene, Operations Hero, whose special package for independent schools was developed in collaboration with Building Solutions. This team is applying its knowledge from years of experience with school facilities applications, observing what works well and where CMMS applications fall short. Based on user input, the most popular features of capital budget management, work orders, preventive maintenance, and facilities scheduling have been integrated and thoroughly tested. The independent school package is delivered with the know-how of Building Solutions included in the technical and applications support.
Planning and the Facilities Life Cycle: No Building Left Behind
Strategic facilities asset management begins with the school’s Strategic Plan and Campus Master Plan and is further informed by a Facilities Audit. On these pillars rest long-range capital programs, periodic capital renewal, and routine facilities maintenance activities, which are funded by operating revenues, special fundraising, endowment return, or reserve (PPRRSM) funds. Protecting the facilities assets requires realistic planning and understanding of the total cost of ownership of buildings. This session will raise awareness of the near term and longer cycle needs of facilities and the impacts and pitfalls of misallocating maintenance funding.
